I love shoes! My daughter loves shoes! I am pretty sure that her daughter (just turned three) is also going to love shoes! I have already given my granddaughter little rubber boots with frogs and turtles on them, and she just received little shoes that look like strawberries in her Easter basket. Where does this come from? MY MOTHER! My goodness, my mother loves shoes! She is the reason for our attraction to shoes!
We do not buy shoes at extreme levels (believe me, in my line of work – we have seen shoe hoarding situations) but my mother, my daughter, and I do love all different types of shoes. My daughter and I have different seasons to contend with – just another reason to have shoes for different weather!
But back to my mother; my mother has taken the time these last two weeks to sort her shoes. My mother lives by herself, in Florida, in the same condo she moved into twenty years ago; but she still has shoes for every season (after living in New England, and for traveling). She has conceded, she has piles of boxes of shoes in two walk-in closets in her condo. Blessedly, she does not have outside storage units to store shoes (oh yes, we help clients with those too!)
During this stay-at-home order, my mother has decided it is time to go through all of her shoes and to donate the ones she is never going to use. She told me she is bringing shoes out to her living room carrying them in a laundry basket, and watching movies on TV while she is sorting her shoes. She is not keeping shoes that hurt her feet, or slides that fall off her feet (and dangerous for falls) – and although she loves to dance – the heels are also getting tried on for one last look of pleasure, and then they are going into the donate box too. She said she is trying on every single pair of shoes she owns.
She said she doesn’t care if her living room looks messy, she is happy going through all of her shoes – and it gives her something to do. And she loves the fact that her closets feel more spacious! She is using small boxes to pack up shoes she is not going to wear again, and putting the boxes in her garage. She said she has a friend who will come get them in a couple of weeks to take them to the donation drop-off.
With the number of shoes my mother has accumulated – this could be a project for another two weeks! I am laughing with her – and she is delighting me in telling me about her project.
If you have a little extra time right now, and you are home alone – maybe a shoe sorting project would be a good use of your time?
